STEEL WOOD INTEGRATED FRAME TECHNOLOGY (SWIFT)

At Pioneer Smith Group, great importance is given to Research and Development, the time, effort, commitment and money we have put into R&D has finally yielded results. The new technology, which we have developed and patented, will prove to be a boon to the boat building industry. We have listed some of the advantagesin using thistechnology :

ADVANTAGES OF ( SWIFT) VESSEL :

STABILITY

The new vessel will have a balanced weight distribution on the Port and Starboard sides owing to a symmetrical frame structure. The steel framing will lead to a lowering of the vertical center of gravity, which in turn will result in improved stability characteristics for the new vessel.

Another advantage is that the ballast quantities normally required forconventionalshipsto lower the center of gravity could be reduced drastically.

SPECIAL RUBBER COATING

A special feature of this concept is the introduction of a special rubber coating used between the steel frame and wood. This is an excellent resilient interfacing between the tough steel and vulnerable wood to prevent friction, arrest the formation of rust on the steel surface, and also to seal andwaterproof both holds.

This is a superior technology when compared to caulking the wooden planks using Oakum to make them waterproof.

KEEL

After a few years in operation, the conventional vessel will create a severe bend in the middle of the vessel. This is due to the non-uniform loading conditions and lack of strength in the mid-ships for the conventional vessel. This situation will not happen to the new vessel as the steel. This situation will not happen to the new vessel as the steel framing provided has more stiffnessthan its wooden counterpart.

ACCURACY

Dimensional accuracy during construction can be obtained for steel work in an easier way than possible for wood. Marking up and erection of steel framescan be accurately carried out leading to port-starboard symmetry of the structural arrangement.

DURATIONOF CONSTRUCTION

It takes, on average 22-24 months to construct a wooden cargo vessel of 2000 Tons deadweight. In comparison to this, a vessel built with the new vessel concept will take about 12 months to construct. A Shorter time frame means better control over building costs leading to improvement in productivity.

WOODENSHELL

Thought has been given to improvise the joints of the wooden planks. Neoprene sealing will be inserted by making grooves between two planks.

This will have the following advantages:

  • Waterproofing will be more efficient
  • Caulking will not be required which saves precioustime and cost

DRY DOCKING

Damage to the vessel during docking shall be minimized by the introduction of steel frames. The wooden conventional boat is used to sustain damagesto itsstructure during dry-docking.

ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY

The new vessel concept is all the more important to environmental preservation as forest reserves decline andwood becomes more scares.

WEIGHT

Surprisingly. the new vessel will be about 25-30 lighter as compared to the conventional vessel. lass eight indicatesless materialcostsleasing to a cost effective solution.

COSTOF CONSTRUCTION

Improved stability and weight will lead to the vessel being more maneuverable.

STRENGTHTHE VESSEL

In the new vessel, the wooden shell in reinforced with steel fames, which provides superior structural strength. Steel possesses same strength properties in all directions while for wood the strength is primarily uni-directional.

SPEED

The weight reduction will also manifest in the increased speed of the vessel. The vessel will have approximately 20% more speed with the same power of main engines as compared with conventional vessels.

CAPACITY

The new vessel can be constructed to suit various capacities ranging from 30 tons to 2000 tons deadweight.

MANEUVERING

Improved stability and weight will lead to the vessel being more maneuverable.

STERN ( PROPULSION SYSTEM )

SMITH’S STERNSYSTEMS

The Pioneer Smith Group supplies stern arrangement systems up to 300mm shaft diameter, rubber systems complete with steering gear,
fixed and steerable nozzles, and many other products used in the propulsion steering of all types of vessels.

Smith standard tapered coupling can be supplied to fit the outfit flange of any gearbox. They are precision machined to close tolerances, to
ensure concentricity and squareness of flange

COOPER BEARINGS

The cooper type of pedestal bearings for intermediate shafts has proved over many years to be the most reliable and problem free. The units require little maintenance. Every part of the earing including the rolling surfaces, can be inspected and or quickly replaced without disturbing any other equipment fitted to the shaft. The bearing races and rollers are precision made from the highest quality hardened chrome steel.

STERN TUBES

Pioneer Smith manufactures stern tubes for different applications. GRP Sterntube assemblies are manufactured from marine grade GRP which will not laminate in salt water conditions. Bronze water-lubricated stern tubes for wooden and GRP hulls. Steel water-lubricated stern-tubes for steel vessels. Steel oil-lubricated stern tubes for steel vessels.

INTERMEDIATE SHAFTS

Smith intermediate shafts are manufactured from mild steel grade 070m20. Smith intermediate shafts are usually supplied as part of a complete package of installation equipment including half couplings, coupling bolt assemblies, and intermediate bearings.

PROPELLER SHAFTS

Smith propeller shafts are manufactured from fully certified raw materials, which are smooth ground to close tolerances. Standard shaft assemblies are supplies complete with bronze propeller cone nut and keys. Double tapered shafts are designed to be reversible.
